Abstract:
The Indian Nobel Laureate Sir Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman FRS (1888-1970) interacted intensively with the British Scientific Community. He was elected as the Fellow of the Royal Society of London (1924), Knighted by the Colonial Government (1929), and became Hughes Medal from the Royal Society (1930). With the help of unpublished letters and newspaper clips, we first show the influence of his British Physics Professor on Raman's life. Second we discuss, how Raman came in contact with influential British men of science, who nominated him for the Fellowship of the Royal Society? Third we explore the ways he promoted the 'Indian Science' by nominating his countrymen for the Society. Fourth, we illustrate that in 1943-1944, the Secretary of the Royal Society visited India to hold a historical meeting and due to various reasons Raman did not take part in it.
